The variable geometry turbocharger found on your 6.7L Cummins was designed to keep your engine in the power band by effectively changing the A/R of the turbo. It greatly reduces turbo lag on spool up and combats power loss at top end by keeping the turbine blades spinning at their optimal boost. It's a drastic improvement over older turbo technology but was NOT designed with longevity in mind over performance.
